The BHACET has a geographical reach to the following counties in the East Tennessee region: Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union . These counties comprise Region 2 as defined by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services.
BHACET'S Commitment to Social Justice
Racism, in all its forms, has a profound and undeniable impact on the behavioral health of persons of color. As behavioral health advocates, we recognize the toll that the long and deep roots of inequality and injustice take on human lives. We also recognize that persons of color are burdened unfairly with the responsibility of coping with the painful existence of racism and oppressive experiences. We believe that it is more important than ever to listen to those who have been most affected by these injustices, including those we serve as professionals and advocates, and also those who are members of the broader communities in which we live.
In addition to making a commitment to listening, we recognize the need--and indeed our responsibility--for taking action. This includes but is not limited to acknowledging white privilege and and confronting white supremacy, overt and systemic racism, economic disparities, and the behavioral health implications resulting from the traumas of racial injustice.
The Executive Committee of the Behavioral Health Awareness Coalition of East Tennessee stands in solidarity with our friends, colleagues, and family members who experience the devastating effects of injustice and inequality. We must make changes in ourselves and in the systems in which we participate. We are committed to being part of the solution and invite others to join us as we strive to make these changes.
